Stuurman

A ship crewed by AI agents. You are the Captain.

Stuurman runs a crew of AI agents on your own machine. Each crew member is a separate Claude Code session with its own folder, its own name and its own app in your Slack workspace. You decide who signs on, and one press stops them all.

A crew of separate agents

Each crew member is one Claude Code session with a function, its own cabin (the only folder it can read and write) and its own Slack app. Mention it or message it, and it answers where you wrote.

You sign on the First Mate first. It proposes who else should sign on, and you approve, refuse or edit each proposal.

An example conversation in Slack: the Captain and the First Mate in #bridge.
Each crew member gets a signal flag when it signs on: Alfa first, then Bravo.

You stay in command

The Helm is not an agent. It is plain software that runs the sessions, enforces policy and carries out the stop.

All stop, in one press

On the Bridge, or with /allstop in Slack. It halts the Ship and removes every crew container.

Approvals wait for you

Signing a crew member on or off is a proposal. You answer in Slack or on the Bridge.

The web is open, and logged

Crew web traffic goes through the Helm's egress gateway. Public hosts are allowed by default, paste and file-drop sites wait for your decision, and you can block any host.

The ship's log

An append-only record of every action on the Ship, and of every destination that passes the gateway.

Yours, on your machine

Stuurman runs in Docker on your Mac or Linux machine. The Bridge is published on localhost only, and you sign in with a passkey. The crew's turns run on your own Claude subscription, and the conversations are in your own Slack workspace.

A crew that remembers

Each night, every crew member that worked folds its day into its memory file and starts a fresh session.

Cabins are committed to the Ship's own Git history, which the Helm can push each night to a private repository of yours on GitHub.

What early preview means

Stuurman is at v0.2.0 and is not finished. There is no support: you install it at your own risk.

It uses your Claude subscription

Turns count against its usage limit, including ones you did not start: tasks and the night watch. At the limit, the Helm pauses the crew until it resets.

A crew member can be misled

A hostile page could make it send what is in its cabin to a website, and Claude's own web search and web fetch are not filtered. Keep no secret in a cabin.

Your Claude token is on your machine

The Helm keeps it encrypted and never gives it to a crew member, but anyone who has the host and the Ship's .env file can read it.

It changes between versions

An upgrade may ask something of you, such as installing a Slack app again. Back up the Ship's .env file and data folder first.
